When the questionable Henry and Mary Crawford come to visit, the house is thrown into disarray as romance flourishes between the young people, forcing Fanny to finally confront the extent of her true feelings for Edmund. Considered Austen's most socially-aware and complex novel, the timid and moral character of Fanny has inspired more debate among modern readers than any of Austen's other female protaganists.
